current strands of collaborative teaching, research and practice

On ethics, I am Research Ethics Fellow for the Faculty Bartlett Ethics Commission led by Professor Jane Rendell, seeking to raise awareness, expand understanding, and collectively develop approaches of ethical practice specific to built environment researchers and practitioners. Current and forthcoming research activities involve: consulting the RIBA on their review of Codes of Conduct and their Ethics and Sustainable Development Commission; co-organising a seminar series Implications with Professor Jeremy Till; collaborating with Dr Rebecca Ross on an interactive website Ethics in Design; writing a series of pedagogic Protocols for Built Environment Research based on generative reflexive questions; publishing a paper Reflect Critically and Act Fearlessly: A Survey of Ethical Codes, Guidance and Access in Built Environment Practice; and writing a new paper First, Do No Harm: The Ethics of Codes, Oaths and Manifestoes in Architecture.

On estates, I work with estate community groups whose homes and livelihoods are under threat, performing archives to revive emancipatory ideas and spaces. Current and forthcoming research activities involve: establishing a long-term historical research and performance project around housing estate caretakers; developing a interactive archive in collaboration with Haggerston residents; publishing a paper based on the Real Estates exhibition curated as part of art collective Fugitive Images featuring contributions from 50 artists, filmmakers and architects; and publishing a book Make Public based on my PhD.

On education, my cross-institutional research seeks to extend architectural education to primary and secondary school children. Current and forthcoming research activities involve: developing a collaborative design, construction and performance project with primary school children in Lambeth around the history of their open-air school, which will form the basis of a series of similar initiatives across state schools in London. As part of my teaching I continue to work with students to develop creative projects that intervene into a site in order to raise questions and make proposals, initiate independent research into the social relations of architecture, devise situated protocols setting out ethical terms of engagement, and write manifestoes to define what practitioners they seek to become. Some of this work with UCL, Aarhus and Centre for Alternative Technology students can be seen here.
